Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator) Level 3 Diploma (Year 2)

This is a two year course that will give you a huge range of experience in child care and education. It will extend both your knowledge and practical skills and in addition, will build your communication, teamwork and study skills. It provides you with knowledge of children from birth to 7 years and practical experience from birth to five years. The qualification enables you to work across a variety of childcare settings. In year 1 you will attend a nursery setting and then a school setting. In year 2 you will have nursery placement that has a baby room; you have a choice for your second placement which could be school or nursery. You will carry out at least 750 hours of placement at 4 different settings. You will be at college for 2 1/2 days and placement for 2 days a week for the whole course. To achieve the Diploma it is a 2 year course; to progress to second year you must be successful in the first year. Ofsted say "The standard of learners’ work is excellent, preparing learners extremely well for employment or to progress to higher education."

Level 3 Award (Yr 1) may progress to the Level 3 Diploma (Yr 2) subject to recommendation. Access to Higher Education programmes e.g. teaching, early childhood studies, social work degrees. Employment: nurseries, primary schools, teaching assistant, family homes and holiday rep.

What will I Study: 

You will study 15 units over the two years, which include: Child development from conception to 7 years; Children's health and well-being; Play and learning; Observation of children; Supporting emergent literacy and mathematics; Preparing for school readiness; International Perspectives; Reflective Practice; Professional Partnerships. Units 8 & 15 are Professional Practice units, which will require you to be observed in placement, collate practice evidence, plan and undertake a range of activities in which you are assessed. You will be planning and leading a range of activities in placement across the age ranges. Ofsted reported that "Learners enjoy their lessons, which are highly relevant and interesting. They often contribute examples of their own experiences from their well-organised work placements." Work placement is an essential part of your course, where you have the choice to choose to carry out extra hours or gain extra responsibilities to help your development.

How will I be taught:

How will I be assessed: 

You will be assessed by a variety of internal and external assessments, as well as in your placement setting. All units are graded A* to D; where internally you will have two chances to gain the grade you would like. Assessments include academic writing, presentations, activity planning and a creative portfolio of evidence. In placement you will be also be observed by an assessor, who will set work to develop your confidence in practice. You will complete 2 externally marked assignments (5000 words each); one in each year.

Successful completion of the CACHE Level 3 Award in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator); subject to satisfactory tutor reference and a clear DBS. 5 GCSE's grades 4-9 (or A*-C) including; GCSE English Language at 4 grade (grade C) and GCSE Mathematics at 4 (C grade) desirable.

Supporting Teaching in Schools - Intermediate Apprenticeship L2

This course enables students to work in a Childcare setting at a supervisory level. It is recognised by Ofsted and staff with this qualification can be counted in ratio.

What will I Study: 

You will study a variety of topics from Child Development, Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity to Personal Professional Development. Two longitudinal studies will be completed to support children's development as well as an Employment Rights qualification. ICT functions skills at Level 2 may also be studied.

How will I be taught: 

You will attend college once a week for the duration of the course as well as being supported one to one by a college assessor.

How will I be assessed: 

Assessment will take place in the work place and in the classroom. An assessor will visit you in the setting to observe your practice and support you with your longitudinal studies. Underpinning knowledge will be assessed by a range of methods including written work and assignments.
